Queer Body Movement Specialist

I’m MJ and I started Queermvmt to commit to supporting the lgbtqia+ community through movement and pain relief. Having experienced the harm that fitness culture can do, I wanted to create a resource that focused on the individual's experience of their body. Prioritising accessible, joyful movement I hope to help members of their community connect with their bodies and develop a better understanding of what their individual needs are.

The main focus of my work is using movement as a tool to help lgbtqia+ folks with pain management (from circumstantial to chronic), to feel more connected to their body and to prepare for/recover from gender affirming surgeries.

Principles of My Practice

Pain free movement

“No pain, no gain” is a phrase that is used far too much in movement spaces. The idea to push through no matter what, that things should hurt to be worth it. I completely disagree - my priority in working with people, especially those with existing pain, is to find and utilise the movements and ranges of motion that are absolutely pain free. I am here to support you through the use of movement, not use it against you.

Individualised focus

Every body is different and has different needs. There is no golden rule for movement, a lot of the time what works for one person won’t necessarily work for another person. I believe it is a priority to find the approaches and movements that work best for each individual body.

Anti diet-culture

The obsession with weight loss and the self-denial used to achieve it is usually at the forefront of a lot of movement systems and “ideals” within society. Many folks in the lgbtq+ community have experienced how damaging diet-culture is to an individuals physical and mental well being. The focus and practice of my work will never be weight loss - my intentions are to use movement to celebrate and empower your body.

Body joy

So many people put themselves through certain exercises or routines because they feel they have to, even if they hate what they’re doing. I believe movement should be joyful and that there is a way to experience delight through movement for everyone.
